The short-lane problem

Visual acuity notation assumes a testing distance, but very few modern exam rooms actually offer an unobstructed 20 feet. Medical office space is expensive, and rooms keep getting smaller. Practices squeezed for space have historically had two options: accept an improvised setup with charts that were printed or projected for a distance the room does not have, or renovate. Both are bad answers, because the underlying issue is simple geometry — an optotype's size on the chart is only correct for one distance.

Light travels from the screen to the mirror and back to the patient, so the effective optical distance is the full folded path — effectively doubling the testing distance a short room can provide. Can I test visual acuity in an exam room shorter than 20 feet?

Yes. AcuityMaster calculates optotype sizes from the actual patient-to-screen distance you enter, so a shorter lane still produces correctly scaled charts. For very compact rooms, mirror mode uses a wall mirror to fold the optical path and recover testing distance.
